The Great Coharie Creek (stream index 18-68-1) draws water from the Cape Fear River Basin and empties into the Black River. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NC DEQ) designates the waterway as a Class C and Sw waterway. ‘Class C’ waters are protected for uses such as wildlife conservation, fish consumption, maintenance of biological integrity, agriculture, and secondary recreation (i.e. wading, boating). ‘Sw’ classifies the waterway as Swamp Water, distinct due to low velocity flow and other natural characteristics (such as elevated nutrient levels).
